Facility Philosophy and Goal

Mulberry Manor operates on the premise that all human beings possess worth and dignity.

A little history about Mulberry Manor from beginning to present:

It all started in 1964 when James and JoAnn Keller started a room and board home in Anna, Ill. which had a big beautiful yard. (located 20mi. south of Carbondale, IL).  In 1967 James and JoAnn upgraded to a Shelter Care Home and many of the residents transferred from Lincoln State School to Anna. The home was very popular and became home to the first State Wide Horse-Shoe tournament. The local high school, churches and many volunteers (some of the activity department from Choate Mental Health assisted) made this a big success. Breakfast and lunch was provided by volunteers and the winner went home with a big trophy and KFVS-TV Station covered the event. Bill Irvine, then Chief of Public Health, made the trip to see the tournament. We were quite proud of his presence.

In 1972 another phase was added. A 49 bed ICF/DD facility was built in the same area at 612 E. Davie, Anna, IL. The home was named after a large Mulberry tree that stands at the entrance to the facility (Mulberry Manor).  It has caused many conversations during the years some good and some bad, at certain times of the year we clean up buckets of berries that fall all over the ground, cars, etc., yet we can’t get the nerve to cut it down since its now part of the tradition and history.

Some of the favorite activities in the home are Karaoke with pizza and coke every Friday night. Movies with coke and popcorn provided 3 times a week. Bingo every day with prizes. Community activities include shopping, eating out, St. Louis Cardinals games,  A-J High School games, St. Louis Zoo and Grant’s Farm and a trip to Lambert’s at Sikeston, Mo. (famous for their thrown rolls).

The next expansion was two fold. The business had out grown Jim and JoAnn’s ability to manage everything so Kel-Tech Management Company took over the business part of the Manor and another expansion was started.
